Siamo arrivate al confine finalmente. La Cambogia purtroppo ha continuato a non sorprenderci. Anzi ci ha lasciato con molto amaro in bocca.

Finally, we’ve made it to the border. Unfortunately, Cambodia kept on not taking us by storm. On the contrary, it left a bitter taste in our mouths, not only literarily speaking!

Sono quasi le 5 di pomeriggio: più di due ore che attendiamo il visto per attraversare il confine del Laos.  Dopo un viaggio di 40 minuti troppo caro anche per un minivan di lusso e che di lusso non è, arriviamo al confine ed un ”addetto” ci accompagna, prima della frontiera, al solito bettolino di bevande per la compilazione del modulo. Qui scopriamo, in modo tutt’altro che cortese, che nonostante il visto laotiano costi 35 dollari, noi saremmo costretti a pagarne 44, per consentire che quasi un 30% extra vada direttamente nelle tasche di questi “stanchi lavoratori”. La sopratassa è così giustificata: 5 dollari per lavoro straordinario (certo, sono le 3 di pomeriggio di un giovedì!) 2 dollari perché l’addetto cambogiano ponga un timbro sul passaporto per l’uscita, altri 2 per il corrispondente timbro laotiano! Una vera presa in giro. E quando proviamo a chiedere spiegazioni ci viene gridato che c’è il rischio di dover aspettare tutto il giorno, se non si vuole pagare la mazzetta, o di tornare indietro! Che dire, non è altro che l’ultimo episodio dei tanti che abbiamo vissuto. Solo money, sempre money. Corruzione, prezzi triplicati o peggio per i turisti, scortesia ogni qualvolta si metta in dubbio l’onesta di chi ti sta vendendo qualcosa. 

It’s almost 5 pm and we’ve been here for more than two hours waiting to cross over to Laos. After a 40 minute journey that was very expensive even for the “deluxe” minivan which turned out to be a local one picking up anything and anyone that came its way, we arrived at the border crossing where we were dropped off at a refreshments stall some 100 meters away from the border ramp. A self acclaimed official (of course he just happened not to have his id with him!) was already there to give out the visa forms and help us fill them. This is also where we were very rudely  “informed” of a sudden 30% increase in visa price owed to the “extraordinary” working hours on a Thursday afternoon! When we tried to object questioning the whole scheme, we were simply offered to walk back to Cambodia, as nobody would let us leave the country without paying the bribe requested! 
Needless to say, this was merely the last of many rip-offs that we experienced in this country. Only money and always money is all that counts here. Corruption, generally exaggerated prices reserved for foreigners, ruddiness and bad attitude every time you doubt the sincerity of stories sold to you.

La Cambogia dei sorrisi è tale solo fintanto che sei cliente, ma, capisci molto presto, che quel sorriso ha un costo e finita la transazione non c’è modo di andare oltre a quella facciata e creare un vero scambio umano. Non che nessuno ci abbia mai trattato con maleducazione, ma semplicemente con non curanza. Non compri, non ci sei.

Proprio non so. La Cambogia che ci era stata dipinta in maniera idilliaca da tanti turisti, noi non l’abbiamo vissuta. Si sa, ogni viaggio è un’esperienza a se stante, si tratta di casualità e di incontri lungo la strada e noi non siamo state fortunate in questo. Avremmo voluto scoprire di più, ma non abbiamo trovato il modo giusto.
Certo nei piccoli centri meno turistici la gente è ancora autentica e gentile o alla capitale abbiamo trovato il più amichevole dei baristi di strada che ci ha fatto assaggiare il miglior caffè cambogiano (grazie MCcoffee! si trova a fianco del National Museum), ma questo non è stato sufficiente per farci innamorare del paese.

Cambodia, the country of smiles exists only for the buying customers, and you soon learn that the smile in fact has its price and once the transaction is over, there is no way to get beyond that facade and create a real humane interaction. That said, I must admit that, apart for  the border “official”, no one has ever treated us with coarseness, just plain negligence. If you’re not buying, you don’t exist.
We’ve met so many travelers who adored Cambodia and talked of it in a very idyllic way, but unfortunately, despite all our efforts, we couldn’t find that. It is also a known fact that each journey is an experience in itself, a sum of random coincidences and encounters, and I guess ours wasn’t as fortunate as many other travelers’. We really wanted to discover more of Cambodia, but we simply haven’t found the right way to do it...
Of course, when it comes to small towns and villages even slightly off the beaten track, the people we met were still very authentic and friendly. Even in the capital we were lucky to run into the friendliest barista ever who gave us an unforgettable coffee experiences in his street coffee shop (thank you McCoffee guy next to the National Museum), but unfortunately this wasn’t enough to even out all the rest and make us fall in love with the country.

Un paese dove la gente povera dei villaggi rimane nella miseria e senza nessun servizio, dove la corruzione è altissima ed ettari ed ettari di terreno vengono disboscati e bruciati a favore delle compagnie cinesi che esportano gran quantità di legname dal paese, senza nessuna politica di riforestazione. 

Credo proprio non ritornerò, ma è stata comunque un’esperienza .

A country where the poorest people, those in rural areas, continue living in terrible conditions without any services whatsoever, a country where the corruption rate is so incredibly high and where acres and acres of land are being deforested in favor of giant Chinese companies that export immense quantities of wood without any kind of reforestation policy. 
It’s difficult for me to immagine ever to come back here, however though, Cambodia surely was an intense experience.
