We met Viveek through a friend in common and we'd exchanged a few messages on Facebook. When we told him that our train was arriving at Victoria Station at 4:30am, he immediately offered himself to pick us up "It isn't safe for you girls arriving to Mumbai at that hour! Besides, is there anything better than having someone to welcome you in a new, unknown city."

Conosciamo Viveek tramite una amicizia comune, ci scambiamo qualche messaggio su Facebook, e quando gli diciamo che il nostro treno notturno arriva a Victoria Station alle 4.30 del mattino, ci offre subito di venirci a prendere. "Non è sicuro per voi ragazze arrivare a quell'ora a Mumbai. E poi cosa c'è di meglio che avere qualcuno che ti accoglie quando si arriva in una nuova città sconosciuta."

We were staggered by his kindness, but his offer was too nice and genuine to refuse, and so, around 8am (our train was some 3 hrs late - kind of like traveling with Trenitalia) we finally got to meet our "good samaritan" in person! 

Viveek is a rather accomplished artist, a painter more precisely, on Mumbai's contemporary scene. In his early 40's, quite elegant even when waiting for the 3 hours delayed 4.30am train, he's presence just fills the space around him, spreading out positivity and a sense of calmness. He greeted us with his broad smile and friendly eyes and took us to his house - a cozy, humble apartment in a condo in one of the popular residential areas of Mumbai. He offered us a rich, westerner friendly breakfast and showed us to our guest room. "Welcome to my own little ashram" he said smiling, "you can stay here as long as you wish, it's truly a pleasure for me to have you". 

Siamo spiazzate da tanta gentilezza, ma l'offerta è troppo carina e genuina per essere rifiutata. Così sulle 8 (il treno arriva con un ritardo di 3 ore, un po' come viaggiare con Trenitalia) incontriamo il nostro "salvatore" in persona. 

Viveek è un pittore piuttosto affermato nella scena contemporanea di Mumbai. Si presenta molto elegante nonostante abbia aspettato per più di due ore il nostro treno in ritardo. La sua presenza riempie lo spazio attorno a sé, irradia positività e un grande senso di calma. Ci accoglie col suo ampio sorriso, gli occhi gentili e ci accompagna a casa sua - un appartamento semplice ma accogliente in un condominio di una delle famose zone residenziali di Mumbai. Ci offre un'abbondante colazione all'europea e ci mostra la camera degli ospiti "Questo è il mio piccolo ashram" dice sorridendo "Potete rimanere quanto volete, per me è un vero piacere".

Our amazing host, we soon found out, loves having people over, he genuinely enjoys being a host, making people feel good. "Atithi Devo Bhava" he said with a certain pride in each of these words  - "treat your guests as Gods" is any Indian's life philosophy he explained after my numerous overwhelming amazements over his too kind and generous hospitality. 
And now, more than a week later, here I am, sitting in his bohemian living-room sofa made of mattresses and colorful, comfy cushions, surrounded by some of his many brilliant paintings and heaps of good vibes. He was right, it does feel like home here! 

Ed è davvero così. Gli piace aver persone con cui condividere la giornata e metterle completamente a loro agio. La sua dimensione del dare è davvero autentica. Dare per il puro piacere di farlo.  "Atithi Devo Bhava" dice con orgoglio e ci spiega la filosofia indiana dell'ospitalità -  tratta i tuoi ospiti come dei!
Ora, ad una settimana di distanza dal nostro arrivo, eccomi qua, comodamente seduta nel suo salotto bohémien, qualche materasso con coperte e cuscini colorati, circondata dai suoi bellissimi dipinti e pervasa di energia positiva. Viveek aveva ragione: qui ci si sente come a casa!

Apart from giving us his home, Viveek also introduced us to tons of wonderful people, his extended family as he calls them. And just as him, they too have welcomed us so heartily into their homes and lives. And this vast network of his has opened many doors of opportunities for us to get to know and have a taste of so many different dishes, prepared by people coming from all parts of India! Mumbai, being a metropolitan city is home to many different people from all over India who have come here in search of better life. 

Only now, in Mumbai, I feel like we are finally on a true culinary journey that inspired us to leave our ordinary lives in the first place.
So hang on and follow our discoveries as we will be bringing you many interesting recipes very, very soon!

Oltre ad avere condiviso la sua casa, Viveek ci ha anche presentato molte persone meravigliose, la sua famiglia allargata, come li chiama lui. Come lui, anche loro ci hanno accolto calorosamente nelle loro case e nelle loro vite. E così, ci si stanno aprendo, come per magia, moltissime porte del tutto inaspettate. Essendo una città cosmopolita, Mumbai è un crogiolo di culture e chiama a raccolta  persone diverse da ogni parte del paese, che arrivano qui in cerca di fortuna e opportunità. 
Avremo la possibilità di conoscere e assaggiare tanti piatti diversi, preparati da persone provenienti da ogni parte dell'India! 

Solo adesso, arrivate a Mumbai, mi sento completamente dentro il viaggio di scoperta culinaria che ci ha spinto a partire!
