my new favorite breakfast: coconut chutney!

Eravamo alla ricerca di un posto tranquillo dove raccogliere le idee e le ricette sperimentate sinora, e così le indagini di Sanja su internet ci hanno portato a Muhamma...

We were looking for a quite place to take refuge in, in order to work on our ideas and organize the recently collected recipes, and so, Sanja's online research took us o Muhamma.

Appena arrivate ci siamo rese conto che nessuno nella piccola cittadina sapeva indicarci dove si trovasse la nostra guesthouse e questo ha provocato un piccolo dilemma (non senza nostra preoccupazione) tra i locali venuti in nostro aiuto. Il conduttore del rickshaw ha fermato una signora in motorino, la quale ha chiamato il venditore di bibite a lato della strada, il quale ha cominciato a telefonare a qualcun altro. Nessuno si è allontanato o è tornato alle proprie faccende (come sarebbe capitato a chiunque chieda informazioni in Italia o in Europa dove un "non so" sarebbe stata la normalità), ma tutti hanno collaborato dandoci una mano, passando con noi quei 15-20 minuti di totale "ma dove cavolo siamo arrivate?!" e "questo posto non esiste!"… invece le varie telefonate ad amici di amici devono aver fatto effetto perché, a un certo punto, è arrivato sulla sua moto, Santosh, il proprietario di "Breezeland", dove in teoria abbiamo prenotato.

Santosh non ha ricevuto la nostra prenotazione, per cui non è preparato per il nostro arrivo… e tanto meno la casa! "Sorry, Madam" e ci spiega che la stagione per lui inizia solitamente tra un paio di mesi. Deve dare una spolverata, sistemare la camera, ma ci promette che in qualche ora sarà tutto pronto e ripete sorridente "Don't worry, madam".

Beh, un filo di preoccupazione inizia ad insinuarsi: siamo sole, siamo le uniche ospiti. Qui in mezzo al niente, anzi no, in mezzo a palme e risaie, siamo sole…"Del resto volevamo la tranquillità! No?" dico a Sanja, cercando di sollevarle il morale, ma lei continua a guadarmi perplessa.


La vista però dal retro della casa è magnifica. Le risaie tutte attorno sono di un colore verde brillante, un piccolo canale con le nifee delimita il giardino e tutto attorno si possono vedere, senza alcun appostamento, varie specie di uccelli. E’ veramente bellissimo.

A couple of hours' bus ride from Alleppey and there we were. As soon as we arrived we realized that no one in this small town knew anything about our guesthouse and this resulted in a small dilemma (not without our concern) among locals coming to our aid. Our rickshaw driver stopped a lady on a scooter, who called the owner of the small soft drinks hut on the side of the road, who then started phoning some people. The peculiar thing was that no one left or returned to their own affairs (as it would have happened to anyone asking information in Italy or in Europe, where a "Sorry, I do not know" would have been the norm), but here, they all cooperated giving us a hand, spending those 15-20 minutes whit us there in the middle of the main road. All while we kept on wondering where we ended up and if this place actually even existed! Instead, several phone calls to friends of friends must have had an effect because, at some point, Santosh arrived on his motorcycle, the owner of "Breezeland", (where in theory we had booked a room in advance).
It turned out that Santosh had not received our reservation, so he was not ready for our arrival ... and much less the house! "Sorry, Madam" he said, explaining that the season at his place usually starts in a couple of months. "I just need to dust off, and get your room ready, but I promise everything will be ready in a few hours" he explained, and repeated smiling "Do not worry, madam."
Well, a bit of worry started to creep up, we were alone here, we were the only guests. There, in the middle of nowhere, actually no, in the middle of palm trees and paddy fields, we were alone ... "After all we wanted some peace and quite! Right?" I said to Sanja, trying to lift her spirits, but she just went on looking at me puzzled.
The view from the back of the house, however, was magnificent. The rice fields all around of a bright green color, a small canal with waterlilies bordered the garden and all around, without any stakeout, we could see various species of birds. It was really beautiful.

Santosh ci dice anche che volendo può cucinare per noi - del resto ristoranti a meno di qualche chilometro non ne ho visti - e sottolinea "sono specializzato nelle colazioni".

Per non stressarlo ulteriormente con la nostra presenza - "tomorrow everything will be perfect" continua a ripeterci - decidiamo per una passeggiata nel villaggio. Tante case immerse nel verde delle palme e dei banani sono collegate da piccole stradine. Diversi canali sfociano nel lago distante da qui solo qualche centinaio di metri. 

Santosh also told us that he could cook for us as a part of the deal - after all, coming here, I hadn't seen a restaurant within miles - and he added importantly, "I am specialized in breakfasts."

In order not to stress him further with our presence, decided to go for a walk in the village. "Tomorrow everything will be perfect, you'll see!" he continued saying to us, as we were leaving the house. Many small houses surrounded by green palm trees and banana plants, connected by small streets. Several canals flowing into the lake only a few hundred meters away from our new home. 

La nostra passeggiata è una delle esperienze più belle che mi siano capitate sinora. Nessuno qui è abituato a vedere turisti, per cui tutti ci salutano. La mamme sedute fuori dalle porte di casa intente in qualche lavoretto chiamano i bambini, come a dire “venite a salutare le ospiti!” e i bambini ci corrono incontro, molti felici di mostrare l'inglese imparato a scuola " how are you?" " what's your name?", altri che sono talmente emozionati da non riuscire quasi a parlare, con il nome che esce balbettando dalla bocca, per la troppa agitazione.

E’ tutto un Namaste, un how are you, un oscillare il capo come fanno gli indiani che subito ti sorridono di ritorno compiaciuti. Mai provata prima una accoglienza simile. 

Purtroppo a casa abbiamo perso da tempo l'abitudine di salutare la gente per strada…chissà perché ci si ricorda solo nelle passeggiate in montagna. Dovremmo tornare a farlo più spesso, allarga il cuore. 

Our walk is one of the most beautiful experiences that have happened to me so far. No one there is accustomed to seeing tourists, so everyone was greeting us as we walked by. Mothers sitting at the doors of their houses busy with some chores, called their children as we passed by, as if to say "come and greet the guests!" And the children ran towards us, many happy to show the English they'd learned at school "how are you?" "What's your name?" Others, so excited they could hardly speak, stammering their names due to too much excitement. It was all "Namasthes" and "how are yous", wobbling our heads as the locals do, them immediately returning a pleased smile at us. I had never experienced such heartily welcomes as there. 

Unfortunately, back home, we had lost the habit of greeting people on the street ages ago ... I wonder why, back home, we remember that simple yet powerful gesture only during mountain walks. We should go do it more often, passer-bys greeting each other just makes you feel good!

Dopo una notte non priva di emozioni quasi in mezzo alla natura, al nostro risveglio Santosh ha pulito e sistemato tutto il giardino, spazzando via le foglie, appendendo un'amaca vicino al canale e sistemando due sedie di vimini sotto un ombrellone rosso acceso. E la colazione è pronta.

Questa diventerà la mia colazione preferita idli (o dosa) con chutney di cocco. 
Solo al pensiero mi torna la acquolina in bocca. Il sapore non è né dolce né salato, è la via di mezzo perfetta. Dolcezza del cocco, mitigata dalla foglie di curry che hanno un velato retrogusto amaro, la lieve piccantezza dello zenzero e la varietà di sfumature di sapori delle  altre spezie!

"Questa ricetta, Santosh, me la devi insegnare"… e così è.

After a not emotionless night, almost in the middle of nature, when we woke up, Santosh had already cleaned and taken care of the entire garden, sweeping away the leaves, hanging a hammock near the canal and placing two wicker chairs under a bright red umbrella. And, the breakfast was ready!

Little did I know then, but this was to become my favorite breakfast - idli (or dosa) with coconut chutney. Just the thought of it makes my mouth watery. The taste is neither sweet nor salty, it's the perfect middle ground. Sweetness of the coconut, tempered with curry leaves that have a veiled bitter aftertaste, the slight spiciness of ginger and the variety of nuances of the flavors of all the other spices! 

"Sanotsh, you must teach me this recipe!"… and so it was.
