Un pò come il Mal d'Africa / Still Got the Blues for Asia

Ed eccoci qua, siamo tornate nella “ridente” Bagnacavallo. Sono passati quasi due mesi dal nostro rientro a casa ed ancora non abbiamo completamente incassato il colpo.

So here we are, back in lovely Bagnacavallo. It's been about two months since we came home, yet our return hasn't properly sunk in yet.

Sicuramente passare dal verde brillante di risaie e palme alla piatta campagna della bassa Romagna (abbiamo incredibilmente assistito alla prima nebbia mattutina in agosto!!) può comportare perdita di coscienza e smarrimento acuto. Sarà anche l'impatto così diverso con la gente a farti sentire fuori posto. Diciamo che ci siamo sentite per diversi giorni, anzi settimane, delle vere aliene.
Appena atterrate all'aeroporto di Amsterdam ho pensato “mamma mia se siamo musoni, noi europei!” Arrivando in Europa direttamente da quelle terre di grandi sorrisi ho percepito subito la freddezza della gente. E pensare che prima non ci avevo mai fatto caso, ed ora invece è così chiaro e spiazzante. Dall'india fino a Bali c'è un'energia diversa nell'aria, c'è un'approccio alla vita più rilassato e aperto, che si riflette sui volti della persone. E così quelle persone ti regalano un sorriso o un saluto cortese e poi un altro e un altro ancora e non puoi fare altro che sorridere di rimando e sentirti bene. E così inizi a fare anche tu la stessa cosa in automatico, saluti il tuo prossimo ed anche un gesto così piccolo ti cambia la giornata. Sì, sto scrivendo cose retoriche, ma quando torni da un viaggio come il nostro, la prospettiva sulla vita cambia completamente, mutano le necessità e le cose che prima sembravano indispensabili diventano superflue. Realizzi quanto la tua vita fosse indaffarata, ma sempre concentrata su te stesso. Basta poco per sentirsi meglio e spero proprio riuscire a conservare un pochino di questa nuova prospettiva.

I have a sneaky suspicion that going from bright green paddy fields and palm trees to the flat countryside of North Italian lowlands (we even had the incredible experience of witnessing morning fog in August!!) may have led to our feeling of disorientation and acute confusion. The brusque impact of cultural differences could have had something to do with it too. As soon as we landed in Amsterdam I thought "My goodness, aren't we a sulky bunch, us Europeans!". Coming from lands of unselfishly wide smiles, I couldn't shake off the coldness of the people in Europe. And to think that I never noticed it before when it's so clear now is almost unsettling. From India to Bali there is a different energy in the air, there is a more relaxed and open approach to life, something that is reflected on the faces of the people there. They give you a smile or a polite greeting, and then another one and yet another and you cannot but smile back and feel good. And so you automatically start doing the very same thing yourself; you start greeting your neighbor and even such a small gesture just makes your day. Yes, I'm writing rhetorical things, but when you return from a trip like ours, the perspective on life changes completely. Your needs change and things that once seemed indispensable become superfluous. You realize how bustling and chaotically busy your life was, yet always focused on yourself. Sometimes, it takes very little to feel better and I hope to be able to keep a little bit of this new perspective an make it last.

Comunque dicevo, il ritorno alla realtà è stato duro, e saremmo già pronte a rifare i bagagli e ripartire. Là fuori c'è proprio un mondo!
Dire che la nostra avventura è stata stupenda e incredibile è riduttivo, e non essendo in grado di scrivere un post conclusivo o riassuntivo (leggete i precedente se volete saperne di più), non lo farò.
In compenso vi dico: partite e visitate appena avete l'occasione e un pochino di tempo. Non andate in giro con l'ansia di vedere il più possibile, “perché poi chissà se e quando torno di nuovo”, no! Quel pochino di tempo prendetevelo cercando di non fare i “turisti”, ma bevetevi un chai in strada, mangiate in una bettolina con i locali, fate quattro chiacchiere con chi capita e sarà una esperienza incredibile.
Noi, con questo tour, ci siamo già un po' ammalate di viaggio e sentiamo il nostro primo mal d'Africa, per l'Asia ovviamente… Per fortuna, qualche giorno fa, è venuto a trovarci il nostro amico di Mumbai, Viveek. Come nelle migliori tradizioni, anche italiane, è arrivato dall'India con un pacchettino di doni totalmente inaspettati. Un'altra amica aveva appositamente preparato per noi e mandatoci via aereo le tepla, una specie di piadina speziata. È stato incredibile! Primo perché sono quelle cose che tu credi che facciamo solo noi italiani ed invece no, pure in India si mette il cibo in valigia. Secondo perché quando abbiamo aperto la stagnola un'aroma intenso e carico di spezie ha riportato alla mente tutti i ricordi di 6 mesi fa. E così ci siamo fatte un chai, qualche tepla scaldata sulla piastra, un po' di yogurt (così si mangia in Gujarat) e abbiamo condiviso un'ottima colazione indiana. Era come se fossimo di nuovo a Mumbai nell'appartamento di Viveek. Ahh il potere del cibo!! 

Anyway, as I was saying, the return to reality was hard, and if a chance were to present itself, we'd be ready to pack our bags and leave in a snap. There is actually a world out there!
Saying that our adventure was wonderful and amazing is an understatement, and not being able to write a post or final summary I will not even try to do so (you can read the previous posts if you want to learn more).
On the other hand, I will tell you go and see and visit places as soon as you get the chance. But don't go off planning to see as much as possible, "because who knows if and when I'll come back here again" no! Take whatever time you do have and don't be a typical tourist: have a chai with locals at the chai whalla's stand, eat with the locals at that honky-tonk, embrace the opportunity of chatting with whoever happens to be around and you will have yourselves an incredible experience.
I guess it's fair to admit that we are feeling very nostalgic about our experiences in Asia these days.... Luckily for us, Viveek, our friend from Mumbai came to visit just a few days ago.  Just as in the best traditions, including Italian ones, he arrived from India with a parcel full of totally unexpected gifts. Another friend had prepared some teplas (Indian spiced flatbreads) especially for us and had sent them with Viveek all the way from Mumbai. It was incredible! Firstly because I always thought that stuffing your luggage with food was an Italian thing only and secondly because when we opened the tin foil, intense and spicy aromas brought to mind all the memories from 6 months ago. And so we made ​​some chai, heated some teplas to go with a bit of yogurt (as eaten in Gujarat) and we shared a very good Indian breakfast. It was as if we were back at Viveek's apartment in Mumbai. Ahh the power of food!!
